Gran’s Buttermilk Biscuits

Couldn’t count how many times I’ve made Gran’s buttermilk biscuits but somehow this is the first time I’ve made B&G, despite it being one of my favorite things to order out. Maybe that’s why I wanted to try making it today: not much eating out these last few months.

The recipe called for garlic salt and seasoning salt, neither of which I had so I used some Trader Joe’s Umami Seasoning Blend instead. I’ve been to Trader Joe’s exactly once since the pandemic began eight months ago, and it was because I ran out of that stuff.

Anyway, back to the biscuits...my little one helped me make them and found it hilarious that these were her grandma’s grandma’s biscuits. Maybe she thought I’d had them hiding in the cupboard since 1890 or something, I don’t know. They’re next level better than ever, made with lard rendered by IG @mountain_luv_magic and topped with sausage gravy from a hog my friends and landmates raised (true story, we first met at a county extension hog class) and real milk from more dear ones down the road. Eggs are my girls’ winter best, with jalapeño sauce a soul sister and I made with our CSA from Bear Branch Farms. There’s a video below with the step-by-step how-to.

The kids all gobbled it up. Eventually. There were some eeewwws at first. It really isn’t much to look at, sausage gravy, but it’s actually really good.

Much like pandemic life. There have been a lot of days of late that have felt kinda grey and lumpy. But overall I’m actually really into this stay home save lives stuff. And now that I can make such good B&G, I have one less reason to ever leave the house.

This is my first attempt at making a video that’s more than just splicing two clips together. It’s kind of a disaster. Yet, let’s give ourselves permission to do things we love badly and still hold them as worthy to share. What do you love that you could do badly and share?

Ha! The universe is doubling down on that lesson and telling me I can’t embed the video here from a mobile phone. Until I can get to a computer and do that, here’s the YouTube link...
